Prayer as a Stress-Reduction Practice

For many women living with chronic illness, stress is more than a busy schedule. It’s the uncertainty of symptoms, upcoming appointments, financial concerns, family responsibilities, and questions about the future.

Sometimes the weight of those worries becomes exhausting.

Perhaps you’ve found yourself lying awake at night replaying conversations, worrying about test results, or wondering what tomorrow might bring. You want peace, but your mind keeps returning to the same concerns, and you can’t seem to shut off the internal dialogue.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

One of the most powerful stress-reduction practices isn’t complicated. It doesn’t require special equipment, expensive programs, or hours of free time.

It’s prayer.

Prayer has often been viewed primarily as a spiritual discipline, but it is also a practical way to reduce stress and create emotional calm.

Research continues to show that chronic stress can affect many aspects of health, including sleep quality, digestion, immune balance, inflammation, and overall well-being. Many people find that spiritual practices help reduce perceived stress and increase emotional resilience.

One reason prayer can be so powerful is that it shifts our focus away from ourselves.

Instead of carrying every burden alone, prayer invites us to release our worries into God’s hands.

Instead of rehearsing fearful possibilities, prayer helps us reconnect with God who gives us hope.

Instead of constantly striving for control, prayer reminds us that we don’t have to manage everything ourselves. God is bigger and He wants us to tell Him all about it!

Prayer is simply talking to God as a trusted friend. It doesn’t need to be eloquent, rehearsed, or in a certain place. We can talk to God anywhere, anytime, and in any posture. One of my favorite times of talking to God is while driving. He wants nothing more than to hear from us!

Philippians 4:6-7 NLT offers beautiful encouragement:

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

I love the simplicity of that instruction.

Pray about everything.

Not just the big things.
Not just the emergencies.
Everything.

One simple practice you can begin today is what I call a Five-Minute Prayer Pause.

Pause.
Take three slow breaths.
Tell God exactly what is worrying you.
Ask for His guidance and peace.
Then thank Him for one blessing in your life.

That’s it.

Simple.
Practical.
Accessible.

Over time, these small moments of prayer can help interrupt worry and create more space for peace.

I need to emphasize that “God’s peace,” as the scripture states, “exceeds anything we can understand.”

Have you ever experienced this? Let me tell you, it’s unbelievable! When I finally gave up trying to control my illness and healing, and asked God to intervene, I felt like a heavy weight was lifted from my shoulders. I had a deep peace that didn’t make sense considering the circumstances. That is the peace of God that surpasses all understanding!

When we have peace from God, it changes how we carry challenges. That shift makes all the difference in the journey.

If stress has been weighing heavily on you lately, I encourage you to begin with one small prayer today.

You do not have to carry every burden alone.

God is listening.
God is present.
And His peace is available even in difficult seasons. It’s there for the asking!

In love and health,

Terri
